- Sykes, Guy, Neison, 1848, "Working Class Committee Report"を再訪。この文書はfieldworkとstatisticsの関係性、そしてquestionnaireの利用を考える上でかなりおもしろいのだが、時間が足りなくて博論では軽く触れるだけできちんと分析できなかった。

- Statistical Society of London Councilによって承認されて結成された委員会の調査報告書。調査地はSt. Giles教区内にあるChurch Lane。
- まず、報告書の形式が注目に値する。
- 調査日時、調査場所、調査実施者の名前が記載されている（agentのBalfourとfellowsのSykesとGuy）。
- 調査地であるChurch Laneの住宅事情概観（部屋数、light/water供給・排水・下水関連設備）が与えられ、その後1847年12月23日、28日、30日の調査に基づいて個別の家の状態についての報告、そして住民についての総括となっている。さらに最後の1848年1月17日調査では（個別の部屋ではなく）通り全体の描写（sewerの状態）などが行われている。
- 総括はややgeneralization的なことが行われている。
上下水周りの話は（air, lightと並んで）当時のsanitary movementにおいて重要だったと考えられる。windowの話はairの入れ替えのはなしとして重要。
- 調査対象となる家の所有者（landlords）の名前が実名で示されている。匿名性といった配慮はない。
正確な（verified and attested）描写を与えることの社会的かつ科学的価値。
It is only necessary to premise, that the inquiry of the Committee is consequent upon communications made to the Council by one of its members, respecting the state of the houses and their inhabitants in Church Lane, St. Giles's, which involved such startling circurnstancrs, that the Council deemed it a duty to have them verified and attested, not less for the sake of the public, than to add to those stores of information for the collection of which the Statistical Society was founded. (p. 1)
調査報告書の詳細さと、それがgraphicな描写を与えるという信念。同時に、そうしたgraphicな描写が不可避的に分厚くなってしまうという問題。解決策としての18番目の家屋までの検査。この正当化はある種の典型例の紹介という形になっているのかもしれないが詳細は不明。(see also, p. 16 )
As the value of your Committee's Report would much depend upon the detailed and graphic pictures which it might supply, your Committee resolved to inspect personally every room in every house ; but as such an examination of every room in the street would swell the Report to an inconvenient length, your Committee determined upon taking a portion of the houses; and that there might not be the slightest imputation of selection, your Committee resolved to examine the houses in the order of their numbers. No. 1, of Church Lane, being a shop and a corner house, belonging rather to George Street than to Church Lane, your Committee commenced with the house No. 2. (p. 2)
こうしたgraphicな描写と同時に、一方で巻末に付されるのは数値化された表（この表は要チェック）。
- 巻末で一人あたり空気量が計算されているのだが、このそれだけではあまりにテクニカルな数字を評価できるように参考用の数値（イギリスの監獄とインドの兵舎における一人あたり空気量が示されている）。
- 各部屋の記述は事前に調査項目が決まっていたと予想される。少なくとも、部屋のサイズ（Size of room, [ ]ft. long, [ ] ft. broad, [ ] ft. high）家族構成の（Number of families [ ]; consisting of [ ] males above 20, [ ] females above 20, [ ] males under 20, [ ] females under 20, total [ ] souls.）は各家庭に共通して聞いているので、明確に指示があったと予想される。（巻末の統計表ではこいれらがまとめられている）部屋の状態について「filthy」や「bad」「dirty」などといった評価語が使われているが、それに対する観察者のmorallyな反応やショックなどは記録されて折らず、matter of fact的に記述されている。
穴埋めフォームの使用は欠損値の利用可能性とも結びつく重要な論点。基本的には報告書の記録はon the spotでとられたノートからの転写であることが記されている。穴埋めフォームを持ち歩いていた可能性があるが、この実物は現在のところ発見できず

- また、観察者の衝撃に似たものは追加のremarkのところで記録されている。しかし、ここでもかなり記述が短いことに注意。衝撃は報告が終わったあとの最後の総括でより流暢に表現されているので、事実報告／総括の間にカテゴリカルな差異が設けられていた戸考えられる。

- 興味深いのは引用の不在。当時の議会報告書などですでに事実のauthenticityを高めるために住民の声の直接引用といった技法は利用されているはずなので、それが欠如しているのは重要。特に情報の収集過程で住民にインタビューしたように見られるのでそれをあえて利用しない調査報告書文体の合理性というのは探究に値する。
New Ocford Streetの設置によって退去させられた人たちの流入のChruch Laneについての影響については付録のMr Mannのレポートを参照と書いてある。
- これはHorace Mannによる「Statement of the Mortality Prevailing in Church Lane During the Last Ten Years, with the Sickness During the Last Seven Months. Contained in a Letter Addressed to Dr. Guy」JSSL, vol. 11-1, pp. 19-24のこと。
- 最後に総括とsuggestionが与えられている。ここではかなり踏み込んだ記述がなされている。住環境のひどさ、特に同衾の習慣が人間のmindをダメにしてしまう道徳的な問題として描かれている。奇妙で興味深い精神についての理論が開陳される。社会的／道徳的問題としてのover-crowding。委員会の範疇にないという前置きをした上で、改善案を提案している。そこではpreventive-charityというGuyが好んだ表現も見られる。

- 上記のSykes Reportで参照するように指示されている。
- St Giles in the Fields北部のChurch Laneについてロンドン統計協会が行った調査に対して、私的にSt Giles in the Fields北部についての情報収集をしていたMannがChurch Laneに関連する情報を提供するという体裁。手紙はCouncil宛（具体的な宛先はHonouarary SecretaryであったGuyであったが）。
- Mann理解ではSykesらの調査はsanitary conditionを調べるもの。
- MannのGROによるセンサス記録と死亡記録を使った分析の方がChurch Laneへの実態調査よりも整然として見える。これについてSSLのひとたちはどのように反応したのか（多額の資金を投入する値打ちはあったのか）。
- workhouse調査についてはGROによってカバーされておらず、SSLの協力を得たようであるが（しかし、それもworkhouseのhouse-surgeonからの情報提供らしいので、実際に現地に行く必要性はよくわからない）。
