基本史料

データベース

未刊行史料はNational Archives。特定個人のアーカイブはOxford Dictionary of National Biographyにだいたい載っているが、Archives Hubで特定することもできる。

19世紀の英語書籍などはかなりの量がInternet Archiveにあがっているので、そこからダウンロードできる。google booksにも結構ある。

また、雑誌・新聞などの出版物については、ProQuestのデータベース（機関認証ログインが必要）からさまざまな媒体について一括検索がかけられる。詳細条件を加えると、特定の時期／雑誌だけ抽出できる。

イギリス議会での議論はオンライン版のHansradで見つかる。政府系文書（Parliamentary debateとSelect Committee）についてはProQuestのサービス「House of Commons Parliamentary Papers」が利用できる。また、19世紀の記事はしばしば無署名だがその著者を推定するのには「The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900」が使われる。ただ、京大からはBritish Periodicalsへアクセスするとそこから自動的に著者推定してくれる気がする。

Hathi Trustという組織は何をしている組織なのかよくわからないが、学術雑誌のカタログが充実しているので科学史で利用するのに便利。あとは、Cambridge University Library、British Library、医学史系ならWellcome Library。Biodiversity Heritage Libraryもどういう組織なのか不明だが、科学雑誌を電子化していることがある。

電子化されてない本はAbeBooksやebayで買って電子化するとよい。

19世紀イギリスにおける（社会）科学

Scientific Societies

19世紀イギリス科学史全般の問題としてRoyal SocietyとBAAS (British Association for the Advancement of Science)がひとまず重要。

狭義ではscienceではないが、重要だった組織として、Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge（SDUK）がある。

Science Journalism 系

The Athenaeumは文芸雑誌として知られるが、その対象範囲は広く、科学についての情報もかなり含んでいる。これについては以下の論文も参照。

Statistical Society of London (SSL)

統計学ではSSLが重要。SSLの雑誌はすべて電子化されており、jstorで手に入る。また、SSLの後身であるRSS(Royal Statistical Sociey)の書籍コレクションについては、エセックス大学に寄託されているため、そこのspecial collectionから探せる。

Manchester Statistical Society

初期に調査レポートを発行していた。定期刊行物としては1850年代からTransactions of the Manchester Statistical Societyが発行されていた。

Social Science Association (SSA)

Social Science Associationの正式名称はNational Association for the Promotion of Social Science。1857年の最初の会合以来、発表内容は（選別の上？）Transactionsにまとめられた。1886年に解散。BAASと同じスタイルで、開催地が毎回異なり、それぞれのトピックに特化した部会制をとっていた。

SSAが出していたperiodicalは以下の三つのタイトルで変遷したようだ。

  • Journal of Social Science (1865/1866)
  • Social Science: Being the journal and Sessional Proceedings of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science (1866/1867)
  • Sessional Proceedings of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science (1867/1868-1882/1883)

Sessional Proceedingsは全16巻あるとされるが、手元にはないし、onlineでも（一部を除いて）見つけられなかった。Cambridge University Libraryにはある。さすがにどこかで電子化ないしマイクロフィルム化されてそうな気がするのだが。

  • Meliora: or Better Times to Come, (1852-1853)
  • Meliora: A Quarterly Review of Social Science in its Ethical, Economical, Political and Ameliorative Aspects (1859-1869)

Melioraというタイトルは1852年と1853年にViscount Ingestreによって編集されWilliam GuyやHenry Mayhewを執筆者に含む『Meliora: or Better Times to Come, Being the Contributions of Many Men Touching the Present State and Prospects of Society』というものと、その後1859年から1869年まで12号出版された季刊誌『Meliora: A Quarterly Review of Social Science in its Ethical, Economical, Political and Ameliorative Aspects』とがあるので混同しないように注意。

Ethnology SocietyとAnthropology Societyが分裂して、1872年にAnthropological Societyとして再統合されるので、雑誌がかなりややこしくなっている。
