博論審査ではWilliam Guyの統計的社会政策論と先行する政治思想の差異をはかるようにという宿題をもらたったのだが、まだよくわからない。ということで、政治思想と社会科学、社会政策の絡まり合いみたいなものをきちんと勉強し直す必要がある。Lawrence Goldman、Eileen Yeo以外では、CambridgeのPeter Mandlerがsocial scienceの歴史とからめてそういった仕事をしていたような気がする。が、実はかれの仕事はよく知らない。

ちょっとこれを全部読むのは大変すぎるので、とりあえず書評を読んで関係ありそうな本だけをピックアップして、あとはPeter Mandlerは友人の指導教官のはずなので、友人に聞いてみるのがよいだろう。

ひとまず、Peter Mandler関連論文を読む。

Peter Mandler, 2011, '[book review ] After Adam Smith: A Century of Transformation in Politics and Political Economy, by Murray Milgate and Shannon C. Stimson' Victorian Studies, vol. 53-2.

かつてヴィクトリア朝の研究とpolitical economyの歴史の研究が密接に結びついていた時代があったが、そのつながりが現代の歴史学ではうしなわれてしまったことを振り返りながら、書評対象であるAfter Adam Smithがあまりに学説史よりなので、一般の歴史家にとって近づきがたく、歴史学と経済学史のつながりをとりもどすことはできない（し、著者らに意図がない）と論じている。Mandlerの問題意識はわりと理解できる。わたしは統計学史を科学史的観点からやっているのだが、イギリス史家の反応を見るに、19世紀イギリス史との結びつきをもうすこし強めて欲しいのだろうなと思う。が、わたしはそこまでイギリス史に詳しくないのであった。スコットランド啓蒙についてはDonald Winch, Istvan Hont and Michael Ignatieff, Boyd Hiltonらの活躍が触れられている。

Christopher Hamlin (1998) Public Health and Social Justice in the Age of Chadwick: Britain, 1800– 1854とLynn Hollen Lees(1998) The Solidarities of Strangers: The English Poor Laws and the People, 1700–1948の書評。Hamlinの仕事が福祉国家の生権力的なところに関心を向けるところがFinerによるThe Life and Times of Sir Edwin Chadwickに対する抵抗としては機能していると褒めつつも、アクター間の立場の違いを捨象し単一の知＝権力の強固なシステムを見る俗流フーコー主義と批判している。まあ、ありそう。あと、同じくFinerとは大きく異なるChadwick像を描いたAnthony BrundageのEngland's "Prussian Minister": Edwin Chadwick and the Politics of Government Growth, 1832-1854が無視されていることも批判している。当時の政治状況に置ける複数のタイプの個人主義、ホイッグ主義、ピール主義、ベンサム主義、マルサス主義などについては以下を読めばよいらしい。
